UPDATE on SAM: Sam is not currently available for adoption. Sam is an absolutely wonderful dog 99% of the time. The other time, he has some serious issues. It is best he not be placed for adoption at this time. He is available for sponsorship only.

Sam has endured 12 years of unthinkable violence and abuse. He has no teeth on the one side of his mouth from being hit in the mouth by a metal chair. He was beaten on a regular basis. Sam came from a home of an alcoholic. When the man would come home drunk he would beat the wife. Sam tried to protect her, he ended up getting the worst of it. He will protect whom he feels needs protecting in the family. He will attack the other person. This mostly happens at night. When someone leaves the room and tries to enter the room, he thinks that he has to protect his person.

Unfortunately due to Sam's behavior problems he will not be available for adoption until further notice. Won't you please help defray the cost of Sam's care?

Rather than tell you about Sam the Man, I am just going to post the letter from the shelter worker that I received.

Hi Gina,
Thank you for speaking with Carrie today about Sam. Please find the attached photos you requested and Sam's weight is approximately 42 pounds.
I'm sure Carrie told you all about him but I thought I'd just mention a few things. Sam is about 12 years old and comes from an awful, abusive home. He is a really great, sweet dog when he knows he can trust you. Sam has been living in the office with us (the office staff) for the past few months and so we've gotten to know each other pretty well. He is a fearful dog, for obvious reasons. He would rather run away than be confrontational. He does not like workmen of any kind. I haven't figured out if it's the build, the scent, the hat? I'm not sure. Obviously something reminds him of his abuser. He is more afraid when he is in his crate than when he walking on a leash or just free in a room. He uses his growling and barking as a way to keep people away from his crate, he rarely growls or barks outside or when he is free in a room. I think he would do much better in a home environment with consistant positive reinforcement. Unfortunately, in the shelter, he is frightened and stressed which isn't condusive to good behavior in any dog especially those with a difficult background, even the office has more traffic than Grand Central Station. Sam has many great qualities as well. He loves other dogs and has lived with cats. He's a super kisser! He loves to play fetch. He is very intelligent and knows sit, stay and paw. He loves to play. He can be very affectionate and very happy. He does a little dance when he knows he is getting his breakfast or dinner. He is great with his "family" aka the office staff. He does seem to be a bit protective of us sometimes. There are men and women in the office and he loves us all the same. I thought he was afraid of men but it seems to be selective. He loves belly rubs and long walks. He pulls on the leash out of the gate but as we get going he walks very nicely. We recently had him neutered and he also got a dental and they extracted quite a few more teeth. He was already missing most of his teeth because his abuser hit him with a metal chair in the mouth. He still eats wet and dry food and loves his chewies. He still has molars that he can use to eat and he is very food motivated. I am able to take anything out of his mouth, out of his food bowl. But with most others he wouldn't allow it, probably. Some people have a problem getting his leash off once he is back in his crate but with me he's super. I crawl in his crate with him when I clean it (and he doesn't feel like getting out of the
