UPDATE: March 24, 2016
Kuma is very loving and energetic male Eskie, who loves walks and playing with his toys. He loves to ride in the car and and wants to be with you all the time. He likes to sleep with his owner and does not like to be crated, kenneled, or confined away from the household activity or his owners. Kuma needs an owner who is at home, and a home with no children and not a lot of people traffic in the home. He is VERY protective toward the person he bonds with, and will resource guard them on occassion.
Kuma gets along with other dogs. In his foster home, Kuma loves to play with the smaller and more submissive Eskie but not with the larger one, who is very alpha and territorial.
Kuma gets along well with the foster's friends and wants to love on them as well. However, because of his owner protectiveness, his foster parents make a point to have their friends come by first just to meet and get to know Kuma, so he will be comfortable with them.
In December 2014, Kuma suffered a severe injury (a FCE) to his spine while playing with a toy with his sister. For several days it was very much touch and go whether he would ever be able to walk again. But our Christmas Miracle stood up and walked 4 days later. You can read his story here:
Kuma recovered from this injury with only a slight limp to show for it. In Januarty 2016, Kuma's limp became more pronounced and it was identified that he needed knee surgery for a luxating patella. He also appears to have ongoing neck pain from an injury, and is now on Medrol, probably for the rest of his life.
None of these injuries slow Kuma down one bit! He is fast, active, and thinks he can do anything. He jumps on and off the couch on his own. And if he wants to be spoiled he will stand with his paws on the couch and whine until you help him up. He makes all kinds of funny noises trying to get your attention, and if that doesn't work, he will sit and stare and bark at you until you do what he wants. Did we mention he LOVES attention?
Kuma attended 6 weeks of a basic obedience class at Cool Critters Studio. He knows basic commands and comes when called. He is very potty trained and has never had an accident (ask the foster about her cute potty which shows just how smart he is).
The foster mommy can talk about Kuma for hours, and says he is absolutely adorable.
Sadly, Kuma has had way too many homes and moves in his short past. His first owner abandoned him with a pet sitter, who ultimately was unable to keep him for financial reasons. His next owner wasn't comfortable with his protectiveness and separation anxiety. He has had two foster homes. Finding the right FOREVER home for him is paramount. Kuma's perfect home would include:
- Single person or couple, with someone home most of the time
- No children
- Previous experience with American Eskimo's or similar protective breed
- A quiet home without a lot of people traffic and/or company
- Home with no stairs
- Fenced yard
- Another dog about the same size would be fine, as long as the dog is not alpha or aggressive. Another Eskie playmate would be ideal.
- Kuma is not going to adjust overnight to another new home - he needs someone with patience and love - to help him work through his issues, and to feel safe and loved forever.
Kuma is being fostered in Melbourne, Florida. If you have any questions about Kuma, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. If you are interested in Kuma and meet all or most of his forever home criteria above, please complete an online adoption application at:
